Polar Bear 100K

What seemed to be a line of over 500 riders, I rode into the start and was happy to have my arm warmers, gloves, sunglasses, and some type of head gear under my helmet. I’m not used to long cold rides on the bike, and I usually warm up fast when I’m running on the trail. The temperature was in the 40’s and may have reached a high in the low 50’s by the end of the day.

You don’t normally think about this, but the road is exposed, and the wind travels freely, and the sun will beat down on you if it is shining. On the East coast trails that I am used to, we are usually covered with trees.

I clocked a 63.7 miles on my bike odometer with an average of 17.7 mph. It took me just over three and half hours to complete, and I was happy to finish with several strong riders. The last time I rode my bike was on April 29, 2007.
